IVAYLOVGRAD · EASTERN RHODOPES

Ivaylovgrad and the wild Eastern Rhodopes

A quiet town at the very edge of Bulgaria, where three countries meet. Around Crossroad House lies a whole world of Roman roads, fine white marble, adobe houses, calm waters and hills, where every next view tells a new story.

THE TOWN

Ivaylovgrad

Ivaylovgrad is a calm little town in the south-easternmost corner of Bulgaria, near the point where the borders of Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey meet. Life moves slowly here, the streets are quiet, and the hills of the Eastern Rhodopes open up all around. It is a place for people who want to slow down and feel a different, more authentic side of the country.

ROMAN HERITAGE

Villa Armira

A few minutes from town stands the ancient Villa Armira – one of the most impressive Roman villas in Bulgaria, renowned for its rich marble decoration and its unique mosaic, the only one of its kind in the Balkans. It is among the most significant monuments of the Roman era in the country and offers a rare chance to touch the splendour and luxury of a long-vanished age. Walking through this remarkable home is a true journey back across the centuries.

THE SOUTHERNMOST VILLAGE

Mandritsa

Mandritsa is the southernmost village in Bulgaria and the only one in the country founded by Albanian settlers. Among the adobe houses and narrow lanes, the spirit of a bygone era still lives on. This is a place where traditions are kept zealously, and the locals welcome guests with genuine warmth and sincere hospitality.

WATER AND NATURE

Lake Ivaylovgrad

Lake Ivaylovgrad, the longest reservoir in Bulgaria, impresses with its picturesque views. Set along the course of the Arda river, it is a favourite destination for fishing, boat trips and a full rest in nature. Surrounded by green hills and pristine beauty, the lake offers a true escape from the daily rush.

WILDERNESS

Eastern Rhodopes and Natura 2000

The region is a Natura 2000 protected area – home to rich birdlife and to some of the wildest corners of the Rhodopes. Old churches, living traditions and local culinary festivals complete the picture of a vibrant, unspoilt land that rewards curious travellers.
